20th Annual John Coltrane Jazz Workshop

The legendary John Coltrane grew up in High Point. Since 2002, the High Point Arts Council has sponsored the John Coltrane Jazz Workshop (JCJW) for youth as a tribute to this world famous jazz saxophonist.

For the summer of 2021, students will be able to attend a jazz summer workshop in High Point. The workshop is available to high school students with a high level of ability in bass, percussion, guitar/keyboard, brass (trumpet, trombone), or woodwind instruments (clarinet, flute, saxophone). Students must have multiple years of band experience/private lessons and know how to read music to be eligible for the workshop (partial and full scholarships are available).

The workshop is from 8:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m., July 26 – 30, 2021, and will be located at Penn-Griffin School for the Arts located at 825 E. Washington Street in High Point. The registration fee for the workshop is $150. Partial and full scholarships are available for qualified applicants.

During the workshop, students will concentrate on small group ensemble playing, jazz theory, jazz improvisation, and listening and analysis. Attendees will be taught by educators and performers who are highly regarded as jazz specialists. The instructors for the workshop will be led by Wally West, saxophonist, Administrative Director and member of the Piedmont Triad Jazz Orchestra, and adjunct lecturer of Jazz Studies at Gardner-Webb University and UNC Charlotte. Wally will act as Artistic Director.

On Friday evening, July 30, at 7:00 p.m., students will play before an audience at a free jazz concert for the community. The location for this year’s concert will be announced at a later date. The students of the John Coltrane Jazz Workshop will wear the t-shirts given to them during the workshop so that they look and perform as a unified group.

The High Point Arts Council will comply with all Guilford County School policies and procedures regarding Covid-19: temperature checks, mask requirements, social distancing, etc. There will be a minimum of 3 feet of spacing between the students while they are practicing, playing and during breaks. Face coverings are required except when playing a brass or wind instrument. There will be plenty of hand sanitizer available and hand rails, door knobs, and restrooms will be regularly wiped down. Drinks and snacks served will be in individual containers.

The deadline to register for the 20th Annual John Coltrane Jazz Workshop is June 30, 2021.
